PALIMPSEST (2025)
Royal Conservatoire of Scotland // Glasgow Women's Library
Palimpsest is an immersive audio experience, a journey through voice and sound that conceptualises Glasgow Women’s Library as a woman. Through the embodied experience of the listener, this walk invites you to imagine the feminist archive of those people who have been shelved, and to take a place amongst their stories.
Palimpsest was created as part of Activating the Archives, a creative programme by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland at Glasgow Women's Library. Using artefacts and sources from the library collection and archive as stimuli for performance making, artists have delved into forms of autobiographical storytelling such as diaries and zines, considering these as valuable ways to understand women’s lives. Who lives on the shelves of GWL archive? How can performance bring archival material to life?
Vocals and script contributions by: Althea Young, Laura Bissell, Maia Harding, Minnie Crook and Jess Paris.
Activating the Archives was supported by the Creative Launch Fund. The Creative Launch Fund is a pilot joint innovation fund for early-stage projects in the Creative Arts and Humanities, offered in partnership by the University, the Glasgow School of Art, and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Funded by the Scottish Funding Council via the Knowledge Exchange and Innovation Fund and the UK Government via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
